Portals and Place
If eyes are the gateway to the soul then windows are portals to the imagination. I loved the concept behind this project although actually enacting it was an entirely different challenge. My image (meant to be a squirrel in a tree reaching for an acorn as the leaves change from spring to autumn and the empty panel for winter) was fun to curate.
Rather than cut out big sections of material (which would have been the more time effective and straight forward method) I experimented with cutting each part into sections and then arranging it like a puzzle on the window pane. The result was not as visually intriguing as I had originally hoped. The light yellow of the squirrel was almost entirely lost in the strong colors of the tree bark. Although, I suppose in the real world that is how the relationship between trees and squirrels tends to be. The little creatures are often invisible when pressed up against the trees here on campus. I should have expected no less from my little squirrel and his tree.
Windows are, to me, a canvas for the imagination. I sought to create something that inspires the imagination. An image that reminds the mind of all that nature holds. A gentle reminder to look up. I wanted this to be an invitation to let the mind wander sometimes. Because creativity is a gift that amidst the busy routines of life, we rarely accept even in the artistic world.
