“End Where You Begin”
There is a beauty and a sense of futility in the idea of ending where you begin. I chose to focus on that beauty.
For both of my videos I was drawn to the cyclical characteristic of nature. In my first video I chose to capture the water fountain because not only is each droplet of water continually sent cascading down only to be drawn up again, but also because of the shape itself. I wanted to provide a space for the contemplation that ensues when you view a fountain in its totality from all angles. The water which encircles vertically just as the camera made its way around the piece. I suppose this project was perhaps the most I have given room for individual interpretation than actually telling my viewers what they are supposed to think of it.
My second video was a compilation of images taken over a two year span from my same window in Emerson. While liking over the plethora of photos I had, I realized that they actually captured a part of each season: the bright sunny warm seasons, the ushering in of cold rainy season by looming clouds, the changing of the leaves, and the bright night skies.
There is much beauty to be found in ending where you have begun, despite how repetitive and even futile it might appear upon first glance. I suppose that amidst the progressives of our culture and college life, I wanted to impart that sometimes, even going in circles can be just the thing we need in order to move forward.
